Do You Fear Quitting Your Job and Being Able to Support Your Family?

Many moms have that moment where they sit back, generally at work and realize, “I do not want to do this anymore.” This may happen for many different reasons for example: being overwhelmed with balancing it all, not getting along with co-workers or bosses, no longer enjoying what you do, etc. Although the reasons may be different, the fear of quitting without having another option lined up is that you will not be able to maintain or surpass the income you once made. So what now?

When you find yourself unhappy with your current circumstance, it takes a level of bravery, vulnerability, and faith to pursue something new without having the answers all figured out. So what do you do not, still not answers.

First, you must evaluate your finances. What specifically is your income goal for your new venture. Do not just focus on the salary you make, but also the benefits. For example, if you will need to pay for health insurance, then quantify the additional income required. If you will incur other expenses that were not incurred with your previous jobs such as a course you will need to take, then add that to the income you strive to obtain. Also, make sure to understand the absolute minimum you need in order to maintain your household. For this, I think it is important for those from dual-income families to consider the outcome without your partner’s income, as well. For example, if you make, let’s say, $120K a year and your partner makes $200K a year, I would advise planning l to replace your partner’s income as well, so that your starting place is to ensure $320K in income. I always recommend shooting for a higher goal and setting up your marketing plan based on a higher number, so that your partner also has the ability to pursue other ventures if they desire.

Second, evaluate the number of hours you are able to dedicate to a new venture or job in order to ensure you are happy. My personal goal is to work less than 20 hours a week. In order to do that, I will have to incorporate more help when it comes to childcare and housework. I will also need to hire a team to ensure that this happens, because there is no way I can do it on my own.

Third, you must believe in yourself and your ability. You are human and there will be doubts, this is more than normal. This is one of the main reasons I recommend working with a one-on-one coach that will help you realize that you have all you need to ensure your success and a coach that will help you plan accordingly.
